Day 64 – 54 Miles

Ness City, KS to Scott City, KS

Total Miles: 3560

It’s gonna be a short entry today because, surprise, Kansas is boring. Let’s begin. After yesterday afternoons insanity burgers we were all, of course, hungry again by 7 so we headed back to the same spot to get grab some beers and dinner. I decided to go with a salad in order to get some much needed vegetables into my diet but, alas, it is never so easy. The waitress brought out a great big bowl of what looked like a pile of shredded cheese, like if you replaced the few meager pieces of lettuce with tortilla chips and popped that bad boy in the microwave you’d have had a pretty kickass batch of nachos. Don’t get me wrong, it was still delicious but it was not exactly the healthy choice I had envisioned. Despite my vigorous protesting Terry insisted on picking up the bill for the meal and beers for all of us, he said it was because we take care of him as he’s the slowest one. These really are a great bunch of guys and I’m feeling pretty lucky that they scooped me up into their little train.

Chugging along

So now on to today. I woke up at 5:00, packed up and got on the road by 6:00. Our route today was one long, continuous stretch of flat road. FLAT! I thought yesterday was bad, but at least there were a few turns to spice things up a bit. Today was just fucking boring. Nothing to look at, nothing to distract yourself from the endless expanse of road in front and behind you. Nothing. I really wish there was more to say about it but there’s not. Western Kansas is basically the setting for every apocalypse movie ever. The only saving grace was that we got finished pretty early, around 10:30. The first thing we did was park our bikes in the park and head straight across the street to a Dairy Queen for burgers and ice cream, a fitting reward for a mentally taxing day. Stay tuned for the next, and hopefully more exciting, but probably not, edition of James and his Bike!

The most interesting thing I saw today. Some metal silhouettes of cowboys
